We had a visit to a new psychiatrist today and he said something I thought I would share. Apparently, no matter how well your medications were working before, sleep deprivation will completely negate their effect. He said for people with depression and anxiety, sleep deprivation will act like throwing gasoline on a fire. It makes everything so much worse. So if your meds suddenly aren't working, maybe it's because you aren't sleeping well.
He also said getting enough vitamin D can be really important for mental health. He recommended starting on 10,000 units a day at first and then decreasing to a lower amount. I've seen doctors start patients off on 50,000 units a day, but that can sometimes cause upset stomach and diarrhea. But since most of us are not outside enough, we really need that extra vitamin D. Especially women, since it works with calcium to keep the bones health.
