In honor of the last Saturday before school starts and the beautiful weather today, we went for a picnic up the canyon. We planned to stop at Vivian Park, but they were having a family reunion and there were cars and kids and kayaks everywhere. So we drove on up to South Fork Park and ate there. Not everyone was completely enthusiastic about this outdoor activity, but Will and I had a fun little hike. We explored by the creek and then walked on the trails. We found a bush with berries on it that Will told me definitely poison, so I didn't eat any. (We had sandwiches anyway, so I wasn't really tempted.) Then we found some ugly scrubby looking weeds that attracted several butterflies. Shows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! There were tree trunks everywhere, but I couldn't tell if they were all the same age from some big storm or not. One was completely uprooted and blocked the creek, creating a dam where various hooligans tossed there leftover firewood and trash. Cretins. Then we saw a huge mushroom growing out of a tree somewhere else. Just a quiet, fun little walk with my littlest guy.

And last night we had a birthday party with my mom. She won't want me to give away her age, but she warned me about the number of candles I was allowed to put on the cake. I went with three. Mom fixed dinner for us and everything was yummy. But the fun isn't over yet! My little nephew turns four tomorrow and we're going to his party too. At least the kids have a few fun things to enjoy before school starts. This wasn't the most exciting summer, since we couldn't afford a real vacation. I feel kind of bad about that, reading about all the fun trips to Lagoon and Disneyland and family reunions you have all been enjoying. Our most exciting thing of the summer was Randy's work party up at Park City Mountain Resort, and that got off to a rough start. Still, it is what it is, and this is the best we can do. I hope that the times we spend together at home are still going to be the great memories that they look back on. I'm hoping really hard.

Sounds like fun in the canyon! I miss South Fork park. We used to go there a lot. Those small day trips and moments in the outdoors mean a lot to the kids too.
Maybe you could pick up a small part time job with the sole purpose of saving for a great vacation next summer...Disneyland or a cruise or Hawaii or something like that? If you got a job doing something you loved, it would be fun too. I could totally see you working at a bookstore. You would probably know so much about the books and get to breathe in the smell of fresh new books every day!
Hi, Good to meet you via LT and your post on my blog with your fairy name.
Reading reading reading, yes, my husband and I do love to read, as you say also.
And house cleaning, ugh, I agree with you, when I can read, write or garden!
I wrote a book on celebrating Christmas, out this September.
Terra
Thanks for the visit, Terra! I will look for your book.
And working at a bookstore would be fun, but I'm not sure how much work I would get done. Maybe I could call it research!
You know, your kids will understand someday that you made sacrifices as a family so they could have a mom that stayed home with them to take good care of them. It doesn't always take big trips to make memories, you are a great mom, don't ever think different.
